BMW 2002 VIN Decoder
The BMW 2002 is where PetrolJunky starts, not where it ends. This dedicated page uses our reviewed classic BMW production-range database while the main decoder also supports modern 17-character VINs through NHTSA vPIC.
A range lookup, not a modern VIN formula.
BMW 02-series cars predate the standardized 17-character VIN. Their seven-digit chassis numbers are matched against documented production ranges to identify the likely model, market, transmission, generation and production period.
We only publish ranges that have been reviewed for continuity, overlaps and source conflicts. A result can be accurate at the model and production-year level while the exact factory build date still requires BMW Group Archive documentation.
Confidence-reviewed U.S. cars
This release is intentionally narrower than every BMW 02 variant ever produced. Accuracy is more valuable than a large but unreliable table.
More classic BMW families
E3, E9, E21, E24, E28 and E30 are natural future additions once their VIN data can be sourced and validated.
A living vehicle page
A decoded chassis can eventually become a claimable profile with photographs, ownership history, restoration work and events.
