1970–1980 Chevrolet Camaro VIN Decoder
Second-generation Camaro VINs bridge two Chevrolet formats. The 1970–1971 cars retain a cylinder-family layout, while 1972 onward places the actual engine code in the VIN, enabling more precise factory identification.
Decoder coverage: 1970–1980
What this decoder page is designed to answer.
1970–1971 and 1972–1980 are decoded differently
PetrolJunky recognizes both layouts instead of assuming the same position has the same meaning throughout the generation. This lets the decoder identify the model year and coupe body correctly before applying the relevant engine-code table.
Later engine codes can identify displacement and performance families
For reviewed years, the engine character can distinguish combinations such as 250 six, 307, 350, 402 and selected Z/28/SS engine families. Where a year/code pair has not been expanded to a displacement yet, PetrolJunky preserves the raw factory engine character rather than guessing.
Trim labels remain conservative
Series characters can identify Type LT or Berlinetta families in applicable years, but separate appearance/performance packages are not inferred simply because a similar body code was used.
