MG chassis numbers changed, but they stayed informative
Early TD cars use a straightforward TD or TD/C car number. TF and early MGA identifiers add body, color, market and paint codes. Later MGA, Midget and MGB cars use compact letter prefixes such as GHN5 or GAN5 that identify the model family before the serial number is even considered.
Serial ranges can add production context
For MGB and Midget in particular, published chassis schedules let PetrolJunky combine the encoded prefix with a reviewed serial-number block. Where a North American MGB contains a year letter, that code can provide direct model-year evidence. Where the number only proves a production span, the result says so instead of inventing a date.
The registry keeps the individual MG separate from the model guide
A successful decode creates a vehicle identity record for the exact chassis number. That matters on cars that have been restored, re-engined or retitled over decades because decoded factory identity can remain distinct from later community history.

Can PetrolJunky decode an MGB chassis number such as GHN5/UA/187211?
Yes. Formatting separators are normalized, then the GHN/GHD prefix, optional market/year code and serial range are decoded.
Does an MGA chassis number contain original market or color information?
Early MGA 1500 identifiers can encode body style, original color code, market and paint finish. Later MGA 1600 identifiers use a different, simpler scheme.
Can the decoder distinguish MG Midget GAN series?
Yes. GAN1 through GAN6 are mapped to the corresponding Midget generations and reviewed chassis-number ranges.
