Classic VW chassis numbers

Volkswagen VIN Decoder and Registry

Classic Volkswagen decoding becomes highly structured from the 1965 model year, while earlier Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 cars rely more heavily on sequential chassis ranges. PetrolJunky handles both paths behind the same VIN field.

What this decoder page is designed to answer.

1965 and later Volkswagens encode the family and model year

For many classic Volkswagens, the first two chassis positions identify the vehicle family and the third position identifies the model-year digit. The decoder uses the additional format changes around the 1970 model year to distinguish otherwise similar-looking numbers and then maps the prefix to Beetle, Super Beetle, Transporter, Type 3, Type 4, Karmann Ghia or Type 181 families.

Earlier VW serials need range matching

Pre-1965 Volkswagens commonly use shorter sequential chassis numbers. Those numerical sequences can overlap between Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 families, so PetrolJunky can return more than one plausible candidate instead of hiding the ambiguity. Historical prefixes such as early Type 1 or Type 2 markings can materially increase confidence when they are present.

The registry preserves the individual car

A decoded VW can become a permanent registry record with photographs and ownership history. That is especially useful for cars that have been modified, converted or restored, because the sourced chassis identity remains separate from the story that later owners add.

Common questions

Volkswagen VIN decoder questions

Why can an early Volkswagen chassis number have multiple possible matches?

Before the encoded 1965-era format, Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 chassis sequences could occupy overlapping numerical ranges. PetrolJunky shows that uncertainty instead of forcing the number into one family.

Can a classic VW chassis number identify the model year automatically?

From the 1965 model year onward, many Volkswagen chassis numbers encode the model-family prefix and model-year digit directly. Earlier cars are dated with sequential range evidence.

Does the VW decoder cover the Thing?

Yes. The Type 181/182 family is supported, including later 18A, 18B and 18C year-code extensions used in the decoder data.
