Model and engine are both encoded
Prefixes such as XP/XS/XH/WH/WS identify Charger families while JH/JS identifies Challenger lines and WM identifies Super Bee applications in specific years. The fifth character carries the original engine family, including 340, 383, 426 Hemi and 440 variants where applicable.
Year matters when interpreting the same code
Chrysler reused engine letters across model years, so PetrolJunky looks up the engine code in the context of the encoded year. A J means Hemi in some earlier VINs but 340 Six-Pack in 1970–1971, for example.
Rare packages still require documentation
Fender tags and broadcast sheets remain essential for many option claims. The VIN decoder provides the factory identity foundation without replacing those records.
Recently updated Dodge records
Decoder facts stay tied to the exact VIN or chassis number while owners decide what history and photographs to share publicly.
