JH and JS E-body VINs

1970–1974 Dodge Challenger VIN Decoder

The E-body Challenger has a strong pre-standard VIN structure. JH identifies the base/high-line family while JS identifies performance-oriented series; body, engine, year, plant and sequence follow in fixed positions.

What this decoder page is designed to answer.

JH and JS establish the Challenger family

PetrolJunky validates those prefixes only for the years where they belong and then reads body codes such as hardtop and convertible before decoding the fifth-character engine.

1970–1971 performance engines are particularly informative

Year-aware mappings can distinguish 340, 383, 426 Hemi, 440 four-barrel and 440 Six-Pack families where offered. Later years reuse some letters for different engines, which is why the decoder never maps an engine without the year context.

R/T labeling is limited to supported series years

JS is treated as R/T for 1970–1971 and more generically as a performance-series Challenger afterward, preventing a later JS VIN from receiving an historically inappropriate R/T claim.
