Eleven-character Mustang VIN decoding

Classic Ford Mustang VIN Decoder & Registry

Early Mustangs used an eleven-character Ford VIN that contains much more information than a generic modern-VIN service usually exposes. PetrolJunky reads the original year, plant, body, engine and six-digit unit sequence without requiring a dropdown.

Decoder reference

What this decoder page is designed to answer.

Ford Mustang VINs are information-rich before 1981

From the launch-era cars through 1980, Mustang VINs encode a model-year character, assembly plant, two-character body code, engine code and six-digit unit number. PetrolJunky combines those fields with period-specific rules so the same first character can be interpreted correctly in cases such as 1970 versus 1980.

The 1964½ question is handled explicitly

Collectors commonly call the first production run 1964½, but Ford encoded those cars as 1965 models. PetrolJunky uses the Dearborn/San Jose sequence breakpoints and early engine set to identify that production phase while still returning the legal 1965 model year.

Special packages are not guessed

Some VIN body codes were shared by standard fastbacks and desirable packages such as Mach 1 or Boss. The decoder reports the body and encoded engine accurately but does not manufacture package provenance where the VIN is insufficient.
