Mustang II eleven-character VINs

1974–1978 Ford Mustang II VIN Decoder

The Mustang II retained Ford’s eleven-character pre-standard VIN format, but its body and engine tables changed completely from the first generation. PetrolJunky switches code sets by model year instead of trying to reuse 1960s meanings.

What this identifier can tell you

1974–1978 Mustang IICoupe and hatchback body codes2.3L, 2.8L and 5.0L engine families

Mustang II body codes are distinct

Codes 02 through 05 cover coupe, hatchback, Ghia coupe and Mach 1 hatchback configurations in the period data. The same hatchback code can also appear on Cobra II-equipped cars, so PetrolJunky does not treat a generic 03 VIN as proof of the Cobra II package.

Engine decoding covers the major families

The Y code identifies the 2.3-liter four-cylinder, Z the 2.8-liter V6, and F the 5.0-liter V8 in the years where each was offered. That allows a useful factory-style result even though the VIN predates the modern 17-character standard.

Registry records preserve the original VIN

The normalized lookup creates a stable chassis record while retaining the original eleven-character identifier, allowing owners to add photos, ownership history and supporting documentation later.
