1968–1971 Dodge Charger VIN Decoder
Charger VIN prefixes changed as the model evolved. PetrolJunky recognizes core XP/XS second-generation combinations, 1970 XH and selected 1971 W-series Charger prefixes while validating the engine character against the encoded year.

This page explains Charger, but the input accepts every PetrolJunky-supported identifier.
What this identifier can tell you
The first two characters carry model/series meaning
XP commonly identifies the standard Charger family in 1968–1969, XS the R/T line, and later prefixes shift as the 1970–1971 series changes. The body positions distinguish hardtop/sports-hardtop configurations before the engine and year characters are read.
Engine decoding is year-specific
Classic Mopar engine letters changed meaning over time. PetrolJunky uses the encoded year before mapping codes such as H, L, R, U and V to their period-correct engine families.
Daytona and Charger 500 claims are kept conservative
The 1969 XX family is recognized as the special Charger 500/Daytona VIN family, but the decoder does not choose a specific aerodynamic package without supporting body/tag documentation.
