The GAN prefix identifies the Midget generation
GAN1 and GAN2 cover the early Mk I cars, GAN3 the Mk II, GAN4 and GAN5 the 1275-era Mk III evolution, and GAN6 the 1500. PetrolJunky combines the prefix with the serial number rather than treating every Midget as one undifferentiated model.
Chassis milestones add year context
The MG Car Club Midget Register publishes first-car and model-year breakpoints throughout production. Those boundaries let the decoder identify many cars to a specific model year while preserving documented gaps where Abingdon restarted the numbering sequence.
Suffix letters do not change the core car number
Factory suffix letters such as the Abingdon G can appear after the serial. PetrolJunky normalizes common punctuation and accepts those suffixes while keeping the numeric chassis sequence intact.
