MGB VIN Decoder and Registry

The MGB has one of the most useful classic British car-number systems for automatic decoding. Roadster and GT prefixes identify body style and series, while later market/year letters and serial blocks add model-year context.

What this decoder page is designed to answer.

GHN means Roadster; GHD means GT

MGB car numbers begin with a compact model prefix. GHN3 and GHN4 identify early Roadster series, while GHN5 covers the long-running later Roadster. GHD3, GHD4 and GHD5 do the same for the GT. PetrolJunky uses the prefix first and then checks the individual car number against reviewed production blocks.

Later North American cars can encode model year

On many later North American MGBs the characters between the series prefix and serial number include U plus a year letter. PetrolJunky treats that year code as stronger evidence than simply estimating from a production span.

1980 uses a different VIN-type scheme

The final MGB production period introduced an international-style identifier such as GVADJ1AG followed by the serial. Those cars are handled locally rather than being forced into the older GHN/GHD parser.

Common questions

MGB VIN decoder questions

What does GHN5 mean on an MGB?

It identifies an MG with the later Roadster body/series code. PetrolJunky then uses the remaining code and car number for additional context.

Can an MGB chassis number encode the model year?

Many 1970s North American cars include a model-year letter after the U market code. Earlier cars generally require chassis-range dating.
