MGA VIN Decoder and Registry

MGA numbering is a perfect example of why a classic-specific decoder matters. The 1500 can encode original body, color, market and paint finish; the 1600/Mk II and Twin Cam then switch to different chassis-number systems.

What this decoder page is designed to answer.

Early MGA 1500 numbers carry several factory attributes

An identifier such as HDA43/10101 can be broken into MG model/body, original color, market, paint system and individual car number. PetrolJunky preserves each of those encoded facts separately.

MGA 1600 and Mk II use the GHN/GHD family

The 1600 generation moved to prefixes such as GHN for Roadster and GHD for Coupe, with L indicating left-hand drive and 2 identifying the Mk II. Serial boundaries separate the 1600 from the Mk II even when the input omits some formatting.

Twin Cam has its own YD/YM sequence

MGA Twin Cam Roadsters and Coupés use YD/YM prefixes and a separate 501–2611 chassis sequence. PetrolJunky detects that system before applying the pushrod MGA ranges.

Common questions

MGA VIN decoder questions

Can an MGA VIN tell me the original color?

On the early MGA 1500 system, yes: the third letter is an original color code. Later MGA systems do not carry the same amount of information.

How does PetrolJunky distinguish an MGA Twin Cam?

Twin Cam cars use YD/YM chassis prefixes and their own serial sequence, separate from the pushrod MGA range.
