MGC VIN Decoder and Registry

The short-lived six-cylinder MGC uses a simple prefix system that is highly suitable for automatic decoding: GCN1 identifies the Roadster and GCD1 identifies the GT.

What this decoder page is designed to answer.

Roadster and GT are directly encoded

GCN1 is the MGC Roadster family and GCD1 is the MGC GT. Optional L and U market codes can identify left-hand-drive export and North American specification before the individual serial.

The chassis number does not need to pretend it knows the exact build date

The first-wave MGC decoder identifies the exact body family and 1967–1969 production span. We will only add finer serial dating when a reviewed factory schedule supports it.

Registry history is especially useful on engine-swapped cars

Because MGCs have sometimes been modified with different engines over the decades, keeping the original chassis identity separate from current mechanical configuration is valuable.
