Corvette VIN decoding

1968–1980 Chevrolet Corvette VIN Decoder

C3 Corvette identification changes during the generation. Early cars retain the 19437/19467 pattern, while 1972 onward introduces the 1Z body/engine/year structure that can reveal the original engine family directly.

What this identifier can tell you

1968–1980 C3 Corvette1972+ engine codesCoupe/convertible body validation

PetrolJunky recognizes both C3 VIN eras

1968–1971 cars decode body, year, St. Louis plant and sequence. From 1972 the VIN also carries the engine code, supporting reviewed combinations such as 350 LT-1/L48/L82 and 454 families.

Body code changes are year-aware

Earlier C3 cars use 37 coupe and, through 1975, 67 convertible. The later fixed-roof era moves to the 87 coupe code. PetrolJunky validates those combinations by year so a superficially similar string is not accepted in the wrong period.

Exact build details remain documentation territory

The VIN does not establish paint, transmission, option package or matching-numbers status. Those belong in supporting registry evidence rather than decoder inference.
