What this decoder page is designed to answer.
Jaguar XK chassis ranges encode more than the model name
XK120, XK140 and XK150 production used separate six-digit blocks for open two-seater, fixed-head coupe and drophead coupe bodies, with additional separation between left- and right-hand-drive cars. PetrolJunky compares the complete chassis number against those factory ranges rather than simply recognizing a Jaguar-looking serial.
Factory heritage data makes the decode stronger
Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust research material documents the number runs used across the XK generations. The decoder includes the unusual late XK150 LHD fixed-head-coupe 847000-series block as a separate range instead of extending an adjacent range by assumption.
Six-digit ambiguity is handled globally
Because other manufacturers also used six-digit chassis sequences, PetrolJunky checks BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen and Jaguar candidates together on the universal decoder. If one number genuinely fits more than one historic system, the site reports the ambiguity rather than assigning the wrong collector car.
