What this decoder page is designed to answer.
How the W126 / C126 chassis number is decoded
PetrolJunky stores selected W126/C126 six-digit model codes such as 126032/033 for 380 SE/SEL, 126043 for the 380 SEC, 126039 for the 560 SEL and 126045 for the 560 SEC. These mappings help with legacy or non-standard records, while ordinary 17-character VINs are deliberately sent to the modern decoder.
What the number does not prove
This is a transition-era bridge, not a replacement for NHTSA on standardized VINs. PetrolJunky uses the classic mapping only when the identifier fits the older chassis-number path and avoids double-decoding a normal 17-character car.
Why register the individual car
W126 and C126 cars are moving firmly into collector territory, especially SEC coupés and high-specification sedans. A shared registry structure means the older chassis-code records and later standardized VIN records can coexist cleanly.

W126 / C126 VIN decoder questions
Why does PetrolJunky have W126 classic mappings if many cars have 17-character VINs?
The mappings help with legacy/non-standard chassis records and the transition period. Normal standardized 17-character VINs remain NHTSA-first.
Can PetrolJunky identify a 560 SEC from a chassis/model code?
Yes. The current classic mapping includes 126.045 for the 560 SEC family.
