What this decoder page is designed to answer.

The fifth character reveals the original engine family

Year-aware Chrysler engine tables can distinguish combinations such as 383 four-barrel, 426 Hemi, 440 and 440 Six-Pack where applicable. The same letter can mean something different in another year, so PetrolJunky never ignores the sixth-character model year.

Body codes are retained as factory facts

Hardtop/coupe and convertible body characters are exposed separately from the model name, preserving the original VIN structure for collector research.

A Road Runner VIN does not authenticate a Superbird

The Superbird was based on the Road Runner VIN family and requires additional body/fender-tag evidence. PetrolJunky intentionally returns the underlying Road Runner instead of transforming every compatible RM VIN into an aero car.
