Toyota Land Cruiser Frame Number Decoder
Land Cruiser frame codes are among the clearest Japanese classic identifiers. Toyota itself documents FJ40/FJ43/FJ45 as core 40-series model codes and the FJ40 production lineage through 1984.
Decode from this page
This page explains Land Cruiser, but the input accepts every PetrolJunky-supported identifier.
What this identifier can tell you
Land Cruiser frame codes became collector shorthand for a reason
Toyota documents FJ40, FJ43 and FJ45 as core 40-Series model codes, and the FJ40 name is now inseparable from the classic short-wheelbase Land Cruiser. PetrolJunky recognizes those gasoline families along with selected BJ diesel codes and later FJ55, FJ60 and FJ62 wagons.
The frame code identifies the family before the serial
An entry such as FJ40-371717 is separated into FJ40 and the individual chassis sequence. The current database uses that frame code to establish the supported model/production family but does not claim a specific build year unless a reviewed serial boundary is available.
Useful across global-market trucks
Land Cruisers were sold and assembled across many markets, so registration documents do not always present their identifiers in the same way. Accepting the original frame-number format makes PetrolJunky more useful than a decoder limited to North American 17-character VINs.
